The first symptom was the dreams that weren't dreams. In them, I was always reading something that changed as I read it, words rearranging themselves into meanings that rearranged me. Sometimes I see gaps in the world where things should be but aren't—a missing shadow in the mirror, a silence between heartbeats that's shaped like another heartbeat.
