The Dollmaker's Saltwater Hands

Kimi K3 and Davinci 002
The third time Elena woke to find her hands covered in saltwater, she stopped calling them dreams. The taste of ocean lingered in her mouth, metallic and familiar, like blood from a wound she'd forgotten she'd given herself. On her nightstand, the glass of water she'd filled before bed was empty, but the ring left behind wasn't from evaporation - it was perfectly circular, raised as if something had pressed against it from below. Soon, Elena started coming home from class to find similar circles sitting between her needlebook and her pincushion, flowers frozen between them the way delicate buds get caught and kept suspended within ice. She tried to ignore the pattern, hoping it was just a coincidence, but one day the precision, the care, them, herself, she could no longer ignore the cracks between them. -- Elena had always though the connection between dollmaking and quilting both lovely and clear. It was a way to rememberm, a way to spread out, to give life, to pass quiet bits of time breathlessly - beautiful, in a soothing way -- but now, now that she could no longer passively coexist with facts, understand them just concrete enough to be dull, still connect them to normal life her calm, her quiet, fell apart. As it became solid, she had no choice but to realize that there was nothing redemptive about it, just a manic craving for the flat and crisp and clean and concrete arrested into this moment, this mineral beauty, disconnected from understanding, and it felt like trying to polish painful memories into glass that reflected only herself. She felt foolish. She tried to remember the real safe places in her life: in china cups, the promise of tea
