The third time she woke up with saltwater in her lungs, she stopped going to sleep on her back. The doctors called it sleep apnea. Her grandmother called it something else entirely, in a language she'd never been taught but somehow understood perfectly when spoken in dreams. "They remember you," the old woman had said, pressing a dried starfish into her palm. "The ones who never made it to shore." And she hadn't wanted to believe it. But then Carmilla stopped leaving Sarah Gibbs or Katherine Hepburn behind at her house. And Laura started needing Ronan's Voice again only when she believed the voice belonged to one of them.
