She found the first tooth in the garden soil, white and small, and planted it without thinking. By autumn there were seven, each in its own row, and she had begun to dream of mouths opening in the earth, saying things she couldn't remember upon waking. The woman who sold her milk stopped coming. The milk had started tasting of copper, of something waiting to be named. When she sat outside to drink it on summer evenings she would see ghostly shapes, greener things that were people moving quickly through the trees, smiling, clutching at each other. Once she mentioned this to her father, but he slammed his door and said, "It's foolishness, everything is deception." His voice was older than hers and she envied him something for it. She began to hear things at night, something calling her name beyond the blue line. By her third winter, more than half the teeth had fallen from her hand in the snow. She watched them melt. He stayed home from work, nail-bruised
