The handwriting wasn't hers but knew her name, knew the exact shape of the scar beneath her collarbone, knew to write: "Remember the sound of the ice breaking? It wasn't what you think." Later, after she'd read it seven times by the dying light of a candle that burned too quickly, she realised neither page 116 nor 117 existed—she'd been holding two copies of page 115 glued together with something that tasted of regret when she scraped at it with her fingernail.
She kept finding blue envelopes where the sun couldn't reach. Beneath the third floorboard that always creaked twice in winter. Inside the hollow handle of the teapot she'd never used.
